A legacy of over 100 years
With due respect to our founding members and deep gratitude to them, we acknowledge our appreciation for the establishment of this insitution Associação Académica de Moira (A A M). We pledge to take their legacy forward.
A A M came into being officially through a portoria (portuguese legislative authority) dated 20th January 1920, signed by the Governoer General Jaime Morais and published in the Government Gazette (Boletin Oficial) of Friday, 16th of February, 1920. We thank the Communidade de Moira for having given this land to A A M for establishing and Academy and Club for the youth of the village of Moira to be used for sports and cultural acitivities.
The 1930s and 1940s were pivotal for the Associação Académica de Moira, as it expanded its facilities and influence. A new annexe in 1935 allowed for the addition of a library and cultural event space, while the Silver Jubilee in 1945 was a significant milestone, drawing high-profile guests and celebrating the club’s growing prominence. The 1950s and 1960s saw further growth with the construction of sports facilities, including a badminton court and improvements to the football ground, making the club a central hub for sports and social events.
This era also saw a boost in membership as returning Goans from East Africa revitalized the club’s activities. The club continued to host prominent football matches, including those against Portuguese teams, which became a major attraction. The steady development of its facilities and events during this time ensured that the A A M remained a dynamic and influential part of the local community.
The 1970s brought new energy to the A A M, marked by its Golden Jubilee and community-driven events such as ‘Nite in Moira,’ organized by Peter Carmello. During this period, the club expanded its sports offerings, adding volleyball and chess, while hosting athletic meets that highlighted local talent. Despite facing membership declines in the 1980s due to emigration, the club made significant improvements, including leveling the football ground to maintain its sporting facilities and stabilize its operations.
The 1990s marked a phase of modernization, with a focus on revitalizing the club’s structure and practices. A new membership system was introduced, along with efforts to restore traditional activities and enhance community involvement. These modernization initiatives helped ensure the A A M's ongoing relevance, reinforcing its role as a vibrant cultural and recreational hub within the community, adapting to new challenges while honoring its rich heritage.
"Celebrating a century of community and legacy at Associação Académica de Moira. Together, we continue to build on our storied past."
